Communicating visually through infographics is one of the easiest ways to explain complex concepts, demonstrate an organization’s impact or share accomplishments. A picture is worth a thousand words and infographics are an amazing way to tell your foundation’s story without overwhelming readers.

The National Center for Family Philanthropy and Youth Philanthropy Connect, a program of the Frieda C. Fox Foundation, have teamed up on the release of our latest Passages Issue Brief entitled, “Igniting the Spark: Creating Effective Next Generation Boards.” As a supplement to “Igniting the Spark,” we have also developed a series of case studies of youth engagement strategies being used by multi-generational family foundations as well as community foundations involved in the YPC network. This month we feature strategies and lessons learned from the Lawrence Welk Family Foundation.

Study Finds Private Foundations Rebuilding Assets After Recession Declines

Data gathered from 140 private foundations for the 2012 Council on Foundations–Commonfund Study of Investments for Private Foundations (CCSF) show that these organizations’ endowments returned an average of 12.0 percent (net of fees) for the 2012 fiscal year (January 1 – December 31, 2012), a significant improvement over the FY2011 return of -0.7 percent. The 2012 CCSF represents the first fruits of collaboration between the Council on Foundations and Commonfund Institute: the most comprehensive annual survey of its kind by two leading authorities on foundation investment practices and governance.

A major study of public education philanthropy found that education reforms have been accompanied over the last decade by a shift in financial support from private foundations. The biggest example is the shift of philanthropic dollars from traditional public schools to charter schools, a finding guaranteed to fuel flames in the charter vs. traditional public schools debate.
