Personal handwritten notes grow rarer by the day. According to the U.S. Postal Service's annual survey, the average home only received a personal letter once every seven weeks in 2010, down from once every two weeks in 1987. And The Wall Street Journal recently lamented the "lost art of the handwritten note." Some might claim that in a wired world — where emails, tweets, and text messages are more accessible than handwritten notes — this is the natural evolution of communication. Who has time for stamps, stationery, and "manual" spell-check, after all? But I think it's premature to write off the importance of handwritten notes. They remain impactful and unique in several ways.

In this interview with Knowledge@Wharton, Bush spoke with Katherine Klein, vice-dean of Wharton's Social Impact Initiative, to discuss how individuals can bring meditation and "mindfulness" into their everyday lives. (It's not as difficult as you may think.)

One of the most surprising, and perhaps confounding, facts of charity in America is that the people who can least afford to give are the ones who donate the greatest percentage of their income. The wealthiest Americans donate 1.3 percent of their income; the poorest, 3.2 percent.

While organizations show slight signs of financial improvement, this is also the 5th straight year in which they reported dramatic increases in service demand. 78% of respondents reported an increase in demand for services, about half of respondents weren’t able to meet that demand.
