At a time when funders must be more responsive and adaptive than ever before to meet the challenges and opportunities facing Ohio’s communities, Philanthropy Ohio is here to lead and support the philanthropic sector in an ever-changing Ohio.
The September meeting reviewed and reflected on Philanthropy Ohio's policy engagement and partnerships since the Education Initiative began in 2005. Attendees of this working session provided input as we refresh and refocus our education policy agenda for the next biennium. Shaun Yoder, the Ohio Department of Education’s former chief strategy officer & director of external partnerships, discussed the impact of Philanthropy Ohio’s collaborative work and stakeholder engagement. Executive in Residence Claudia Herrold facilitated a strategic conversation to identify vital education policy issues, accomplishments, remaining work and opportunities for impact.
Governor Mike DeWine announced the Ohio Department of Medicaid’s launch of OhioRISE (Resilience through Integrated Systems and Excellence), Ohio’s first-ever highly specialized behavioral health program for children and youth with the most complex behavioral health needs who are served by Medicaid.
Thousands of women are engaged in current-day philanthropy through Women’s Funds, often organized within community foundations and sometimes as separate organizations. Many share a common focus and goal of empowering the lives of women and girls, often with a focus on those whose voices are unheard and whose lives lack opportunities.
When asked to cite examples of what’s working, many of us point to other cities, states or nations – rather than the solutions happening right in our backyards. To change people’s minds, we must shift the narrative – the stories we tell ourselves about how society works and what obstructs change – toward the things nonprofits and their partners are already doing about deep-seated problems.

Byers, Minton & Associates provided an update on Ohio’s post-election policy landscape; legislation in Philanthropy Ohio’s priority areas of health, housing and education; and previewed expectations for the next biennium.
