This program is a part of our Midwest Partnership Series, a collaboration between Philanthropy Ohio, Indiana Philanthropy Alliance, Council of Michigan Foundations, Iowa Council of Foundations and Philanthropy Missouri.

This Midwest Partnership Series program will help private and community foundations better understand legal, accounting, tax, operational and stewardship considerations associated with owning or managing real property. Legal and accounting professionals will highlight key issues to consider, including liability and risk mitigation. In addition to learning key terminology, you’ll hear directly from foundation leaders about lessons learned and what they wish they'd known when embarking on this process.

Whether your foundation already owns property, is considering an acquisition or wants to understand the implications of property ownership better, this session will provide a practical framework for identifying risks, asking the right questions and approaching real estate as a responsible long-term steward.

What you’ll take away:

  • Knowledge of key legal, tax, accounting and liability considerations associated with foundation-owned property.
  • Understanding how a property's use and ownership structure can create different financial, regulatory and operational implications.
  • Practical issues associated with leases, tenants, maintenance, insurance and ongoing property management.
  • Considerations for how long-term stewardship, mission alignment and potential exit strategies should factor into decisions about acquiring and holding property.
  • Questions to raise with legal, accounting, insurance and other professional advisors when evaluating foundation-owned real estate.

Who should attend:

  • Foundation finance staff and leaders with existing property in the foundation portfolio.
  • Trustees and committee members interested in exploring how property use could advance a foundation’s mission and serve the community.
