About the Organization

A community foundation is a public charity that focuses on supporting a geographical area, primarily by facilitating and pooling donations used to address community needs, fund the work of local nonprofits and support positive change for the community. Community foundations offer numerous types of grant-making programs, frequently including donor advised funds, endowments, scholarships, field of interest funds, giving circles and more. Community foundations are funded by donations from individuals, families, businesses and sometimes government grants.

In addition to that of responsive grant maker, a Foundation plays a variety of other civic roles such as educator, catalyst or convener on key community issues and makes available the expertise of its professional staff to a wide range of community efforts.

Since 1973, generous donors have created more than 1,000 funds at GTCF, which today have a combined market value of approximately $417 million. Cumulative grants to support charitable projects over 50 years have totaled more than $269 million, with approximately $24.5 million granted in 2023.
