  4. Building your network of peers through Philanthropy Ohio

In 100 words or less, share a summary of your role at Philanthropy Ohio.

I work within the Programs & Learning team, which aims to connect our members to the insights and individuals that can advance their work and build connections within the Philanthropy Ohio community. As the manager of programs & learning at Philanthropy Ohio, I more specifically help ensure that your professional development experiences through Philanthropy Ohio are impactful, well-designed and expertly orchestrated. In addition to supporting external-facing programs and events here, I’m building our conference app and working with the speakers and partners who help our work be successful.

What’s the best part about your job?

So far, Philanthropy Ohio’s impact-driven mission and vision, as well as the team. It’s been a very welcoming environment and a very inspiring one, simultaneously – what more could you ask for in a new job!?

When did you start work at Philanthropy Ohio?

Career background/education?

I went to Miami University for communications but really leaned into a career in event planning. Although my internships in college were within wedding planning and nonprofit events, my main career experience has been in the technology industry since I moved to Austin, Texas, after graduating from college. I spent the last eight years working as a generalist in operations and program management (see: the nontechnical staff member in the tech office) at a coworking space, a Walmart Technology office and most recently at Techstars. My senior program manager role at Techstars brought me from Austin to Columbus to pioneer the Techstars Columbus Powered by The Ohio State University location. Though I enjoyed my work in the technology sector, I found myself driven to work in a more humanities-focused space and took time to pause my career last summer to join Climatebase’s fellowship. Simultaneously, I began looking locally for a job that would allow for personal and professional growth. I found just the thing, and here we are!

Current city, what you like about it and your hometown?

I currently live in Columbus, Ohio. I grew up in Lexington, Ohio, so I was familiar with Columbus’ offerings when life brought me back… but, I have to say it’s great to have more than a bowling alley for an evening activity! My parents still live in Lexington on some land, and it’s a perfect way to get both a nature and family fix when I need it. The city and the village, the best of both worlds.

What’s something people might not know about you?

I grew up doing gymnastics and have found myself routinely going back to find adult classes every five years or so to see what I can do. I need to find a place here in Columbus!

What do you do outside of work?

I am privileged to say that I love to travel, especially internationally. Otherwise, I love to hang out with friends and family and engage in storytelling (a book, a TV show, a friend recounting an experience, etc.) The thrift store is a favorite haunt of mine, and occasionally I pick up a hobby. Currently, I am running a lot as my partner and I are running a half marathon at the end of the month.
